The Zamboni

The Zamboni

Jeremiah 2:22 – “Although you wash yourself with lye and use much soap, the stain of your iniquity is before Me,” declares the Lord God.

Isaiah 1:18 – “Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord.  “Though your sins are as scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they will be like wool.”

1 Corinthians 6:11 – Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.

Acts 3:19 – Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord

The Zamboni is a unique hockey icon.  The ice resurfacer – it ‘cleans the ice’, or ‘makes ice’.  The closest thing I can think of in any other sport is a lawn mower.  For some reason the Zamboni fascinates sports fans.  And even though it would lose in a race to a Segway, everybody wants to drive it.  The Gear Daddies even wrote a song about it (a great song by the way).   There is a beautiful picture of a profound spiritual truth the Zamboni gives us – one even a hockey player can grasp – a picture of Good News - the Gospel.

The ice surface was once smooth, unblemished.   It became ‘dirty’ when it was scraped and cut into.  Before Adam and Eve ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they were without blemish (Gen 2).  But when sin entered, they were scraped, cut, blemished – no longer a clean surface (Gen 3:1-7).   Adam and Eve are not the only ones with blemishes – we have all sinned (Romans 3:23) and have become like a dirty sheet of ice.  We need a Zamboni.

Our sin is not something to be taken lightly – it is our sin that has created a barrier between us and God (Isaiah 59:2).  And unless that barrier is removed, we will not have eternal life with God in Heaven (1 John 5:11-12).  You cannot clean yourself any more than ice can resurface itself.  Jeremiah 2:22 – “Although you wash yourself with lye and use much soap, the stain of your iniquity is before Me,” declares the Lord God.

But we are not left without hope – this is the Good News.  Isaiah 1:18 – “Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord.  “Though your sins are as scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they will be like wool.”  Scripture is clear that there is only one way to be washed, and that is through Jesus Christ and His sacrifice on the cross and His resurrection.  John 14:6 – Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life no one comes to the Father but through Me.”  And Acts 2:21 – And it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.  And again, Romans 10:9-10 – That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.

As the Zamboni cleans the ice and makes it new, so Jesus cleans the sinner (1 Cor 6:11) and makes them new (2 Cor 5:17).  Have you put your faith in Jesus Christ so that you will be washed and receive times of refreshing in the presence of the Lord? (Acts 3:19)

Do you believe that Jesus can wash you completely clean and cleanse you of every sin?

Do you know someone who could use a simple illustration of the Gospel to they might believe in Jesus?

Todd: excellent comparison of what the zamboni does to the ice and Christ's gift to us of forgiveness and new life.
